“Gimhae Church: Extraordinary and Magnificent”
3. 1885년 4월 5일은 한국교회가 기억해야 할 특별한 날이다.
언더우드 선교사와 아펜젤러 선교사가 복음을 들고 이 땅에 첫발을 내디뎠던 날이기 때문이다. 두 선교사의 내한을 시작으로 많은 선교사가 조선으로 찾아왔고, 아름답고 귀한 사역을 감당했다.
선교사들은 세 가지 건물을 세우기 시작했는데, 우선은 병원과 학교를 세워 시대적 상황과 낙후된 사회 형편으로 고통받던 이 땅의 사람들을 살리고자 했다. 그리고 구원의 방주가 될 교회를 세웠다.
한국교회에는 100년이 넘는 역사를 자랑하는 교회가 많이 있는데, 그 교회들의 공통점은 외국 선교사에 의해 세워진 교회라는 것이다. 그런데, 김해교회는 매우 특별한 교회이다. 부산에서 윌리엄 베어드 선교사에게 복음을 들은 배성두가 자기가 운영하던 약방에서 예배를 드림으로 교회를 시작했기 때문이다.
김해교회는 1883년 서상륜, 서경조 형제에 의해 황해도 장연면에 세워진 소래교회에 이어, 한국 사람에 의해 세워진 두 번째 자립교회이다. 현재 소래교회는 사라졌기 때문에 김해교회는 현존하는 가장 오래된 자립교회인 것이다. 그래서 김해교회는 정말 특별한 교회이다.
하나님이 그렇게 특별하게 세우신 김해교회는 130년 동안 아름다운 사역들을 감당하며 지금도 이 자리에 서 있다.
On April 5, 1885, the arrival of missionaries Underwood and Appenzeller in Korea marked a significant milestone for the Korean church, as it heralded the introduction of the gospel to the region. Their presence paved the way for numerous other missionaries to embark on impactful ministries in Joseon. These missionaries established vital institutions such as hospitals, schools, and churches, providing essential aid to alleviate the hardships and poverty prevalent in society. While many churches in Korea with over 100 years of history, can trace their origins back to foreign missionaries, Gimhae Church stands out as a special case. Founded by Bae Seong-du, who was inspired by missionary William Baird in Busan, the church's establishment at his herbal drugstore holds historical significance. Gimhae Church is the second church established by Koreans, succeeding Sorae Church, which was founded in 1883 in Jangyeon-myeon, Hwanghae-do, by brothers Seo Sang-ryun and Seo Gyeong-jo. As Sorae Church has since disappeared, Gimhae Church now holds the distinction of being the oldest existing church established by native Koreans. Through the grace of God, Gimhae Church has stood strong for 130 years, continuing to carry out impactful ministries.
